An example of using a metal detector to search for hidden wiring

An example of using a metal detector to search for hidden wiringAt one of the facilities where I carried out electrical work on the “inside”, that is, the installation of internal electrical wiring, I needed to find where the wires pass under the plaster.

The fact is that the client suddenly decided to make a suspended ceiling from drywall and its level was just located in the area of the laid electrical wiring under the plaster. Unfortunately, the "unfortunate builders" have already managed to drill wiring in one place ...

I had to redo it. And to show them where to make holes for the dowel, I needed a device to detect hidden electrical wiring.

Unfortunately, such an instrument was not in my arsenal and I went to the store, hoping to get it there. The choice was small, or rather there was no choice at all ...

metal detectorThere was only a metal detector for detecting piping and conductors. Where done, it is not written either on the box or in the instruction manual, and the instruction can be called with a stretch of the tongue; in Russian, there are literally only three sentences.

Well, there’s nothing to do, it’s necessary to look for hidden electrical wiring, I decided to take it all the same, the price of the issue turned out to be 370 rubles.

The device has a mode switch. The first mode is called "M" for finding metal. The second mode with the “V” mark is for detecting current conductors.

There is also a regulator to change the sensitivity of the device.

I could not resist and decided to see how it is arranged inside, especially since to change the battery, the device still needs to be "halved".

Inside the same, there is nothing supernatural device of a metal detector is simple. An electronic circuit board with radio components located on it, a “crown” battery and an inductor.

Immediately in the store I checked the metal detector in the “M” mode - brought a screwdriver to it, an audible signal immediately sounded and the indicator on the case blinked.

Then he switched to “V” mode and brought it to the switch, the device also immediately signaled. Well, I think the device is what I need. And pleased I went to the construction site to show where the wires under the plaster pass.

I want to say right away - I didn’t succeed ... This metal detector squeaked and sparkled both where it is necessary and where it is not necessary! If a metal profile for drywall was located nearby, the device worked. If there was a nail under the plaster or something else ironthen he also worked ...

And neither the adjustment nor the change in the operating mode helped ... At 40 cm from the wiring, the device still signaled! That is, he has a very high sensitivity to the conductors. Of course, this device fulfills its purpose, he finds electrical wiring, but it’s almost impossible to determine its exact location using such a metal detector ...

But in the "M" mode, the device works much more accurately. If a metal object is under the metal detector - he signals. Literally worth taking it a little to the side - stops.

Now, if you look for nails under the plaster, a dowel using such a device is quite possible to determine their exact location.

It would be better of course he so accurately determined the wiring hidden ...

To reduce the sensitivity when searching for wiring, press one hand against the wall, the potential of the body will equalize with the electric field induced around the wiring. This solution applies to the electronic, Chinese screwdriver on the LED (field-effect transistor)
