How to choose a table lamp

Lighting the workplace is an important condition for the productive implementation of tasks. The proper level of illumination is created by local light sources, which include table lamps. The comfort of its use depends on the choice of this light source. On the modern market there is a wide range of both decorative and functional lamps from simple to complex devices with a wide range of additional functions.

How to choose a table lamp

Types and Types

Table lamps can be divided into two types:

1. Decorative.

2. For working lighting.

Decorative table lamps are used to create a subdued uniform light in the room. For this, translucent diffuser shades or lampshades of glass, plastic or fabric are used. Such lamps complement design decisions in the interior and for the most part are not suitable for lighting a workplace.

Decorative lamp

Table lamps for working lighting create a directed beam of light on a work surface, for example, a desk. To do this, use an opaque shade made of metal or plastic about them and we will discuss further.

Table lights

Criterias of choice

Let's figure out what to look for when choosing a table lamp. In this article, we will focus on table lamps to illuminate the workplace. When buying, you need to pay attention to:

1. The design.

2. The source of light.

3. Color temperature.

4. Appearance and materials of the case.

Design

To begin with, constructively distinguish table lamps:

1. With fixed or inflexible design. Such a lamp cannot be directed to the right place. Therefore, working under such a lamp is not always convenient; you have to move it around the table.

2. With a movable structure. You can change the position of the ceiling and direct the light to the desired location. Depending on the design, the ceiling can be tilted at different angles, rotate, change locations in height. you need to decide how the lamp will be installed on the table. There are two options here - those that are placed directly on the table, on a wide base and those that are attached to the table top or other furniture elements. There are different types of fasteners, the main ones are clothespins and clamps, with a screw clamp.

It depends on how well the lamp is installed, whether it will slide on the table and how stable it will stand. It is good if the base is non-slip, for example, rubberized.

The next factor that you should pay attention to is the ability to adjust the position of the ceiling. On most modern lamps, a shade is installed on a flexible neck or on a structure with a set of rotating joints.

Light source - lamps or LED matrixes

LED lamp

Pay attention to the light source itself. Previously, in all table lamps, a lampholder was installed under threaded base E27 for incandescent or fluorescent lamps. This made it possible to replace the bulb if it burned out. In addition, if a threaded base is installed in the lamp, it is possible to use bulbs of any type: LED, fluorescent or incandescent.

Threaded base

There are many LED table lamps on the market now. If they burn out, you will have to repair or change the lamp, simply replacing the light bulbs will not work. On the other hand, such table lamps may not be quite simple, but with a set of various functions, such as brightness adjustment, a built-in clock, a thermometer and other useful additions.

Tip:

If you buy a lamp with a cartridge, you can screw in a bulb of the required power and type, but if your choice falls on LED table lamps, then the maximum brightness is limited by the installed LEDs.For convenience it is better to pay attention to the lamps in which Dimmer, so you can at least lower the brightness if it is excessive.

Dimmer

If you chose a lamp with a replaceable lamp, for example, with an E27 socket, then pay attention to:

1. If you use incandescent lamps, then the ceiling should ideally be metal, in extreme cases made of thick plastic (at least 2 mm). At the same time, the metal shade has its own drawback - it is very hot from incandescent lamps, so you can get burned. A small and thin plastic will melt.

2. The dimensions of the lampshade should be such that the bulbs that you will use do not protrude beyond its edges. Otherwise, it will blind and create discomfort to the user.

Colour temperature

For luminaires with replaceable lamps, this does not matter, since you can unscrew it at any time and screw another. But for LED lights this is an important factor.

Colour temperature

Cold light is quite specific, not everyone is comfortable working under it. In addition, there is information that the blue spectrum adversely affects vision. On the other hand, when working with small parts, cold light helps to concentrate.

Neutral light - optimal for work. Neutral-white lighting is often installed in offices, arguing that employees are more concentrated in such conditions.

Warm light - pleasing to the eye and also suitable for table lamps. But this shade relaxes and it may be more difficult for you to concentrate on tasks.

Housing

Lamps are on sale, with different cases ranging from plain matte to glossy and polished metal.

Contemporary table lamp

Do not be guided only by aesthetic motives, before buying, pay attention to whether the coating of the elements of the lamp housing glare. This will distract and blind.

The color of the table lamp should not be too bright, matte models of natural or dark colors will not be evident and distract from work.

Conclusion

A table lamp is a fairly simple lamp. But you need to responsibly approach her choice. Not only quality and convenience in work, but also the most important thing is the health of your eyes, which depends on the correct selection of lighting. The lamp should not be too dim, but it should not dazzle, and its body should glare - this also distracts attention and causes unnecessary eye strain. And vision needs to be protected.
